Overview

This combination therapy, developed by Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, is an investigational regimen for advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). It consists of axitinib, a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFR-1, -2, and -3) to inhibit tumor angiogenesis, and autologous dendritic cell-cytokine induced killer (DC-CIK) cells. These DC-CIK cells are prepared from the patient's own peripheral blood and are activated ex vivo with the anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody pembrolizumab before being re-infused. The combination aims to synergize the anti-angiogenic effects of axitinib with the enhanced anti-tumor immune response provided by the activated cellular immunotherapy. A Phase II trial (NCT02886897) has evaluated this regimen, showing promising clinical activity in patients with metastatic RCC.
