Overview

A combination therapy consisting of azacitidine, a hypomethylating agent that inhibits DNA methyltransferase, and idarubicin, an anthracycline antineoplastic agent. This combination is used in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), particularly in newly diagnosed patients. Azacitidine works by causing hypomethylation of DNA at low doses and through direct cytotoxicity at higher doses by incorporating into DNA and RNA. Idarubicin functions as an anthracycline that intercalates with DNA, inhibiting topoisomerase II and disrupting DNA replication and transcription.
