Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination therapy consisting of azathioprine, an immunosuppressant, and olsalazine, an anti-inflammatory agent. This combination is primarily used for maintaining remission in steroid-dependent ulcerative colitis. Azathioprine works by inhibiting purine synthesis and disrupting DNA/RNA production in immune cells, while olsalazine delivers mesalamine to the colon where it exerts anti-inflammatory effects by blocking cyclooxygenase-derived products of arachidonic acid metabolism.
