AZD9838 + AZD6563 is an experimental combination therapy developed by AstraZeneca, consisting of the myeloperoxidase (MPO) inhibitor AZD9838 and the P2Y12 receptor antagonist AZD6563. This combination was designed to address the dual pathways of inflammation and thrombosis in cardiovascular disease. AZD9838 acts by inhibiting MPO, a heme protein released by activated neutrophils that promotes oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and the progression of atherosclerotic plaques. AZD6563 is a potent antagonist of the P2Y12 receptor, which plays a central role in ADP-induced platelet aggregation. By combining these two mechanisms, the treatment aimed to stabilize vulnerable plaques and reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Clinical evaluation included Phase 1 studies to assess safety, tolerability, and potential drug-drug interactions between the two components.
