Overview

Azelaic acid + tranexamic acid is an investigational fixed-dose combination topical formulation being developed for the treatment of melasma. The formulation typically contains 12% azelaic acid and 5% tranexamic acid. Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that inhibits melanin synthesis by targeting tyrosinase activity in melanocytes. Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic agent that reduces melanin production by inhibiting melanocyte activation through the plasminogen-keratinocyte pathway. The combination is currently being evaluated in clinical trials by the University of Guadalajara to assess its efficacy in reducing melasma severity and improving patient quality of life.
