Overview

Azelastine + interferon alfa-2b is an investigational combination therapy delivered as a thermosensitive gel nasal spray. It is being developed for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, specifically during acute phases. The combination consists of azelastine, a selective H1-receptor antagonist with antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties, and interferon alfa-2b, a recombinant cytokine with antiviral and immunomodulatory activity. The thermosensitive gel formulation allows for a transition from a liquid to a soft gel upon contact with the nasal mucosa, facilitating the sustained release of the active ingredients. This dual combination is being evaluated by the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical College in Phase 1 clinical trials, often as a comparator or component of a broader regimen including mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes.
