Overview

Azilsartan medoxomil + amlodipine is a fixed-dose combination of two antihypertensive agents used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). Azilsartan medoxomil is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that acts as a prodrug, hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract to its active form, azilsartan. Azilsartan selectively antagonizes the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, blocking vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, resulting in decreased peripheral resistance and blood pressure. Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that inhibits transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. The combination provides additive antihypertensive effects compared with either agent alone[4][6][8]. This therapy is primarily indicated for hypertension.
