Overview

Azilsartan medoxomil + hydrochlorothiazide is an oral antihypertensive co-administration regimen comprising azilsartan medoxomil, a prodrug converted to the selective angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist azilsartan, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. Azilsartan reduces angiotensin II-mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone signaling, while hydrochlorothiazide inhibits renal sodium-chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, promoting natriuresis and lowering blood pressure. This exact two-drug regimen was evaluated by Takeda in a Phase 3 study in moderate-to-severe essential hypertension; it is distinct from Edarbyclor, which contains azilsartan medoxomil + chlorthalidone rather than hydrochlorothiazide.
