Overview

Azithromycin + cefixime is a fixed-dose combination of two antibiotics used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (such as gonorrhea), skin and soft tissue infections, ear and throat infections, and typhoid fever. Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. The combination provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage against both intracellular (azithromycin) and extracellular (cefixime) pathogens[1][5][7]. This dual mechanism may help limit resistance development in certain settings such as typhoid fever[2][7].
