Overview

This combination antibiotic regimen consists of intravenous azithromycin and cefoxitin (Mefoxin), utilized as an extended-spectrum surgical prophylaxis. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, providing coverage against organisms such as *Ureaplasma* species. Cefoxitin is a second-generation cephalosporin (cephamycin) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This specific two-drug regimen is being evaluated by RWJ Barnabas Health at Jersey City Medical Center in a Phase 2 clinical trial to determine its efficacy in reducing maternal morbidity, specifically endometritis and surgical site infections, in non-laboring women undergoing scheduled cesarean deliveries.
