Overview

Azithromycin + cefuroxime is a combination of two antibiotics used together for the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly in cases where broad-spectrum coverage is desired or when mixed infections are suspected. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing the growth and multiplication of susceptible bacteria. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin (beta-lactam) antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. This combination may be considered in clinical scenarios such as community-acquired pneumonia or other moderate-to-severe infections where both typical and atypical pathogens are possible[4][6][7]. The use of this specific combination (azithromycin + cefuroxime) is not standard as a fixed-dose product but may be prescribed together based on clinical judgment.
