Overview

Afuzam is an oral combination medication developed by Bernard Biotech, pairing the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin with the probiotic lactic acid bacillus. Azithromycin exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial ribosome, which prevents the translocation of peptides and inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis. The lactic acid bacillus component is a live biotherapeutic intended to replenish beneficial intestinal bacteria, thereby preventing or treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea and maintaining a balanced gut microbiome during antibiotic therapy. It is indicated for the treatment of various respiratory, skin, and soft tissue infections.
