Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hitop-AZ is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin and the third-generation antihistamine levocetirizine. Marketed by Med Science Pharma, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections that are complicated by allergic symptoms, such as allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and bronchitis. Azithromycin functions by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting RNA-dependent protein synthesis and bacterial growth. Levocetirizine, the active R-enantiomer of cetirizine, acts as a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1 receptors, providing relief from allergy-mediated symptoms like sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion. This combination is commonly used in the Indian market to address both the underlying bacterial infection and the associated inflammatory allergic response.
