A combination antimalarial therapy consisting of azithromycin (a macrolide antibiotic) and piperaquine phosphate (a bisquinoline antimalarial). This combination has been studied for the treatment and prevention of malaria, particularly in pregnant women. Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 23S rRNA of the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit[7], while piperaquine inhibits the Plasmodium falciparum parasite's haem detoxification pathway, similar to chloroquine[9].
