B7-2 + GM-CSF is a combination immunogene therapy approach that combines gene therapy and immunotherapy to treat cancer. It involves using genes that encode the proinflammatory cytokine granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and the T cell co-stimulatory molecule B7-2. This approach has been studied particularly for glioblastoma multiforme, where tumor cells are transduced with these genes to enhance immune responses against the cancer. In preclinical studies, tumors transduced with GM-CSF or B7-2 showed growth suppression, with B7-2 demonstrating greater efficacy. Furthermore, vaccination with irradiated GM-CSF/B7-2-transduced tumor cells has been shown to inhibit growth of wild-type tumors at distant sites.
