Bac-in-a-Box + prevotella melaninogenica is an experimental bacterial cell therapy being developed by Austrianova in collaboration with San Raffaele University for the treatment of multiple myeloma. The therapy consists of *Prevotella melaninogenica*, a commensal bacterium of the human gastrointestinal microbiota, encapsulated in cellulose beads using Austrianova's patented Bac-in-a-Box technology. This encapsulation is designed to protect the bacteria from stomach acid and allow for room temperature storage while maintaining viability. Preclinical studies conducted by Dr. Matteo Bellone's group at San Raffaele have shown that *P. melaninogenica* can protect against the progression of asymptomatic smoldering multiple myeloma to the aggressive, active form of the disease. The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
