Overview

Bacillus coagulans + Clostridium butyricum is a probiotic combination therapy consisting of live spore-forming bacteria. Developed and manufactured by companies such as Qingdao East Sea Pharmaceutical, this combination is primarily used to modulate the gut microbiota and restore intestinal homeostasis. It has been extensively investigated as an adjunct to standard antibiotic-based treatments for the eradication of *Helicobacter pylori* infection, where it helps improve eradication rates and reduce antibiotic-associated side effects like diarrhea. The spores of *B. coagulans* and *C. butyricum* are resistant to gastric acid, allowing them to reach the intestines where they germinate and produce beneficial metabolites, including lactic acid and butyric acid, which inhibit pathogenic bacteria and support mucosal health. The combination has also been studied for its potential role in treating COVID-19-related gastrointestinal symptoms and preclinical models of depression.
