Overview

Traditional-Ohio State University-ventral hernia-abdominal wall tumor refers to the standard-of-care control intervention used in clinical trials conducted by Ohio State University (notably NCT03313310) for patients undergoing abdominal wall reconstruction. This intervention consists of a combination of topical bacitracin ointment and Xeroform (bismuth tribromophenate) petrolatum gauze. Bacitracin is a polypeptide antibiotic that prevents bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting the dephosphorylation of C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, while bismuth tribromophenate serves as an antiseptic and deodorizing agent. Together, they are applied to surgical incisions to reduce the incidence of surgical site occurrences (SSOs) such as infections, seromas, and wound dehiscence in patients treated for ventral hernias or abdominal wall tumors.
