Overview

Bacitracin + neomycin + polymyxin B is a topical combination antibiotic used primarily to prevent or treat minor skin infections resulting from cuts, scrapes, and burns. It is also available in ophthalmic formulations for treating eye and eyelid infections. The three active ingredients are all antibiotics with different mechanisms of action: - Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. - Neomycin (an aminoglycoside) binds to bacterial ribosomal RNA and disrupts protein synthesis. - Polymyxin B interacts with the phospholipids of bacterial cell membranes causing increased permeability and cell death. This combination provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is available over-the-counter in many countries for topical use on the skin[1][2][5][7].
