Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The anti-Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteriophage cocktail is a therapeutic preparation of lytic bacteriophages developed under the THERAPhage project (part of the PHAGEinLYON program) by Hospices Civils de Lyon and CHU de Besançon. The cocktail is designed to target and lyse multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major opportunistic pathogen associated with community-acquired and nosocomial respiratory, bone, and joint infections. The cocktail incorporates highly active and complementary phages, including the jumbo phage V1PA01 (Phikzvirus), V4PA08 (Pakpunavirus), V1PA18 (Pakpunavirus), and V1PA05 (Pbunavirus), which collectively cover a broad spectrum of clinical isolates. To overcome bacterial resistance and expand the host range to high-risk MDR sequence types (such as ST175, ST253, ST274, ST309, and ST395), the developers employ phage training (directed evolution via the Appelmans protocol) to generate evolved phage subpopulations with enhanced lytic activity.
