Overview

Ban xia xie xin decoction + bismuth is a combination therapy that pairs a traditional Chinese medicine formula with bismuth-containing medication. The traditional Chinese medicine component (Ban xia xie xin decoction) consists of seven herbs: Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia corm), Huang Qin (Scutellaria root), Huang Lian (Coptis rhizome), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger root), Ren Shen (Asian Ginseng root), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-baked Licorice root), and Da Zao (Chinese Date). The bismuth component typically includes bismuth pectin or bismuth potassium citrate along with antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor. This combination therapy is primarily used for Helicobacter pylori eradication, particularly in cases with antibiotic resistance. The mechanism of action involves multiple pathways, including anti-inflammatory effects, inhibition of H. pylori urease activity, reduction of bacterial virulence factors, and enhancement of immune function.
