Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Banxia + Houpu is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb pair consisting of Pinellia ternata (Banxia) and Magnolia officinalis (Houpu). This combination serves as the functional core of the classic formula Banxia Houpu Tang and is being developed and studied by Guang'anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences for the treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). The therapeutic mechanism involves the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, specifically by modulating thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) signaling. Additionally, the combination exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, reducing levels of systemic cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), which are often implicated in thyroid dysfunction. It is particularly indicated for patients whose hypothyroidism is associated with TCM syndromes of phlegm-qi stagnation.
