Overview

BBV152A is a specific formulation of the whole-virion inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, COVAXIN, developed by Bharat Biotech International Limited in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV). It consists of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 antigen (strain NIV-2020-770) adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide gel (Algel) and is formulated with a novel Toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR 7/8) agonist, imidazoquinolin gallamide (IMDG). This adjuvant system, known as Algel-IMDG, is designed to enhance the immune response and induce a T-helper-1 (Th1) skewed response, which is associated with reduced risk of vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease. BBV152A was evaluated in Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials, where it demonstrated superior immunogenicity compared to other formulations, leading to its selection for further development for the prevention of COVID-19.
