A combination immunotherapy consisting of viable, metabolically active autologous tumor cells (derived from the patient's own resected cancer) mixed with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), an immunomodulatory agent. This personalized cancer vaccine is designed to stimulate the patient’s immune system to recognize and attack residual or recurring cancer cells after primary treatment such as surgery. The mechanism involves presenting a broad array of patient-specific tumor antigens in conjunction with BCG, which acts as an adjuvant to enhance immune activation. OncoVAX is a notable example developed for colon cancer and has shown significant benefit in reducing recurrence and improving survival in Stage II colon cancer patients[1][6][8]. Preclinical studies have also explored similar formulations for other cancers such as breast cancer[4].
