Overview
BCG-Denmark 1331 + oral polio vaccine is a combination immunization intervention consisting of the live attenuated Mycobacterium bovis BCG Danish strain 1331 and the oral polio vaccine (OPV). This specific combination has been extensively studied by the Bandim Health Project in Guinea-Bissau, particularly in the BCGR trial, to evaluate its non-specific effects on neonatal and infant mortality. While BCG is primarily indicated for tuberculosis prevention and OPV for poliomyelitis, the research focuses on whether early administration (at birth or shortly after) can reduce all-cause mortality by stimulating the innate immune system. The BCG component is administered intradermally, while the OPV is administered orally.
