Overview

BCMA-targeted CAR-T cells (Zhejiang University) is an autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy developed by Zhejiang University in collaboration with Shanghai YaKe Biotechnology. The therapy consists of a patient's own T cells that are genetically modified using a retroviral vector to express a CAR targeting the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), also known as TNFRSF17. BCMA is highly expressed on the surface of malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma, making it an ideal target for directed immunotherapy. The treatment process involves leukapheresis to collect patient cells, followed by ex vivo activation, transduction, and expansion. Patients typically undergo lymphodepleting chemotherapy prior to the intravenous infusion of the CAR-T cells. Clinical trials (Phase 1) have demonstrated significant efficacy in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, with manageable safety profiles including common adverse events like cytokine release syndrome.
