Belladonna + morphine is a combination pharmaceutical product comprising belladonna alkaloids and the opioid analgesic morphine. This medication is primarily utilized for its synergistic antispasmodic and analgesic properties in managing severe pain associated with smooth muscle spasms. Morphine, a potent mu-opioid receptor agonist, acts centrally to elevate the pain threshold and alter the perception of painful stimuli. The belladonna alkaloids, which include atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, function as competitive muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonists. By inhibiting parasympathetic stimulation, these alkaloids induce smooth muscle relaxation and reduce secretions, which is particularly effective in treating conditions such as ureteral colic, gastrointestinal spasms, and post-surgical bladder spasms.
