Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mentocaína R is a non-prescription fixed-dose combination lozenge containing the local anesthetic benzocaine and the polypeptide antibiotic tyrothricin. Developed by Laboratórios Azevedos, it is indicated for the local treatment of inflammations and infections limited to the mucosa of the oral cavity and oropharynx, such as sore throat, hoarseness, pharyngitis, laryngitis, stomatitis, gingivitis, and aphthae. Benzocaine provides rapid, temporary pain relief by reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels to prevent nerve impulse conduction. Tyrothricin, a mixture of tyrocidines and gramicidins, exerts localized bactericidal activity by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation.
