Benzoic acid + camphor is a topical combination therapy utilized for its synergistic antifungal, antiseptic, and analgesic properties. Benzoic acid serves as a fungistatic agent, primarily effective against dermatophytes; it functions by penetrating the fungal cell and lowering the internal pH, thereby inhibiting metabolic enzymes and preventing growth. Camphor is a terpenoid that acts as a mild counter-irritant and local analgesic. Upon topical application, camphor stimulates cold-sensitive receptors (TRPM8) and desensitizes pain receptors (TRPV1 and TRPV3), providing a cooling sensation and relieving pruritus (itching) and minor pain. This combination is commonly found in over-the-counter ointments and lotions intended for the treatment of minor skin irritations, fungal infections such as tinea pedis, and symptomatic relief of insect bites or stings.
