Overview

Berberine + insulin is a combination therapy involving the use of berberine, a plant-derived isoquinoline alkaloid commonly used as a dietary supplement, and insulin, a peptide hormone essential for glucose regulation. Berberine has demonstrated hypoglycemic effects through multiple mechanisms including increasing insulin sensitivity, promoting insulin secretion, reducing hepatic glucose production, enhancing glycolysis, and modulating lipid metabolism. Insulin acts by facilitating cellular glucose uptake and suppressing hepatic glucose output. Clinical studies indicate that combining berberine with insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes can further reduce fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting insulin levels, and improve markers of insulin resistance compared to monotherapy. The combination may increase the risk of hypoglycemia due to additive effects on lowering blood sugar[1][2][3][6][7].
