Overview

Berberine + ProMetS is an investigational combination therapy consisting of berberine hydrochloride and a proprietary probiotic formulation (ProMetS) containing nine strains of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Lactococcus. Developed by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the combination was evaluated in the PREMOTE study (NCT02332759) for the treatment of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Berberine, a small molecule alkaloid extracted from Coptis chinensis, acts as an AMPK activator to improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. The ProMetS probiotic component modulates the gut microbiota, which contributes to improved postprandial lipidemia and glycemic control. The treatment is administered orally, with berberine provided as tablets and ProMetS as a powder.
