Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination of two dietary fiber ingredients, beta-glucan and fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), investigated for its potential to enhance appetite control and regulate energy intake. Beta-glucan is a soluble polysaccharide that increases the viscosity of the gastrointestinal contents, theoretically slowing gastric emptying and promoting satiety. Fructo-oligosaccharide is a prebiotic fiber that undergoes fermentation by colonic bacteria, which may influence the release of satiety-related gut hormones. This combination was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial (NCT00776256) where it was incorporated into meal-replacement bars. The study results indicated that the combination did not significantly affect appetite or food intake in healthy volunteers, despite the observed increase in gastric viscosity.
