Overview
beta-lactam + levofloxacin is a combination antibiotic regimen being evaluated in the BLESS (Beta-lactam +/- Levofloxacin for Streptococcal Bacteremia) trial, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, pragmatic Phase 4 study led by Mahidol University. The regimen combines a beta-lactam antibiotic (such as penicillin, ampicillin, or ceftriaxone) with levofloxacin, a third-generation fluoroquinolone. This combination aims to improve clinical outcomes in patients with Streptococcal bacteremia by leveraging the synergistic or additive effects of cell wall synthesis inhibition (via beta-lactams) and DNA synthesis inhibition (via levofloxacin). The trial specifically investigates whether the addition of levofloxacin to standard beta-lactam monotherapy reduces mortality and treatment failure in adults with invasive streptococcal infections.
