Betabioptal is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic medication containing the corticosteroid betamethasone and the broad-spectrum antibiotic chloramphenicol. It is formulated as eye drops, gel, or ointment for the treatment of non-purulent inflammatory conditions of the eye where a bacterial infection is present or suspected. Betamethasone acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent by binding to glucocorticoid receptors and modulating gene expression to reduce the production of inflammatory mediators. Chloramphenicol provides antimicrobial coverage by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, thereby inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity and protein synthesis. The drug is commonly used to manage post-operative inflammation following cataract surgery and to treat conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis and iridocyclitis.
