betamethasone + neomycin

Vista-Metasone-N is a topical otic combination therapy containing the synthetic corticosteroid betamethasone sodium phosphate (0.1%) and the aminoglycoside antibiotic neomycin sulphate (0.5%). It is primarily indicated for the treatment of otitis externa, where it works by reducing inflammation and treating or preventing bacterial infection. Betamethasone acts as an agonist at the glucocorticoid receptor to suppress inflammatory responses, while neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This specific formulation was evaluated in a clinical trial sponsored by the North Bristol NHS Trust to determine the added benefit of the antibiotic component over steroid monotherapy in the management of outer ear infections.
