Overview

This is a combination regimen of four drugs used in oncology, particularly for the treatment of advanced or recurrent epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer. The regimen combines bevacizumab (a monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor), carboplatin (a platinum-based chemotherapy agent), doxorubicin (an anthracycline chemotherapy agent; note that in most clinical contexts for ovarian cancer, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin is used rather than conventional doxorubicin), and paclitaxel (a taxane chemotherapy agent). Bevacizumab inhibits angiogenesis by binding to VEGF, thereby starving tumors of blood supply. Carboplatin and paclitaxel are standard cytotoxic agents that disrupt DNA synthesis and microtubule function, respectively. Doxorubicin intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II[1][4][5]. While this specific four-drug combination is not a standard protocol in major guidelines or trials for ovarian cancer—most commonly bevacizumab is combined with either carboplatin/paclitaxel or carboplatin/pegylated liposomal doxorubicin—the individual components are all approved for use in these cancers[1][4][5].
