Overview

Bevacizumab + fluoropyrimidine is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that targets and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), thereby blocking angiogenesis, which is essential for tumor growth and metastasis. Fluoropyrimidines, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or capecitabine, are antimetabolite chemotherapeutic agents that inhibit thymidylate synthase, disrupting DNA synthesis and leading to cell death in rapidly dividing tumor cells. The combination has demonstrated improved progression-free survival and overall survival compared to chemotherapy alone in clinical trials for metastatic colorectal cancer[1][2][4][5]. This regimen may be used with or without additional agents like oxaliplatin or irinotecan.
