Overview

bevacizumab + propranolol is an investigational combination therapy being developed by Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). This combination therapy utilizes the synergistic potential of bevacizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds to and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist. While bevacizumab is a standard-of-care anti-VEGF agent that prevents the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina, propranolol is hypothesized to further suppress neovascularization by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors, which are involved in the regulation of pro-angiogenic factors. The combination is administered via intravitreal injection and has been evaluated in clinical trials (such as the BEVALOL study) to determine if it offers superior efficacy in improving visual acuity and reducing macular edema compared to bevacizumab monotherapy.
