Overview

This combination therapy consists of bezlotoxumab, a human monoclonal antibody, and vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic. It is specifically evaluated for the treatment of multi-recurrent *Clostridium difficile* infection (CDI). Bezlotoxumab works by neutralizing *Clostridium difficile* toxin B, thereby preventing the damage to the colonic mucosa that leads to symptoms and recurrence. Vancomycin acts as a standard-of-care bactericidal agent by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. The University of Kansas Medical Center conducted a Phase 4 trial (NCT03880539) investigating the efficacy of adding a single intravenous infusion of bezlotoxumab to a tapered or pulsed oral vancomycin regimen to reduce CDI recurrence rates in patients with multiple prior episodes.
