BI 1356 + ritonavir is a combination of linagliptin (BI 1356) and ritonavir. Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, primarily developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor commonly used as a pharmacokinetic enhancer due to its potent inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which increases the plasma concentration of co-administered drugs. In this combination, ritonavir is utilized to inhibit the metabolism of linagliptin, potentially allowing for higher drug exposure or less frequent dosing of linagliptin. This combination is experimental and is not approved or marketed as a fixed-dose product.
