Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BIAKOS Antimicrobial Skin & Wound Cleanser is a topical antiseptic solution developed by Oculus Innovative Sciences and Sonoma Pharmaceuticals, currently marketed by Sanara MedTech. Its active ingredient is 0.1% polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), a cationic polymer that acts as an antimicrobial preservative. PHMB functions by binding to and disrupting negatively charged microbial cell membranes and DNA, leading to cytoplasmic leakage and cell death. The product is designed for the mechanical cleansing and removal of debris, foreign materials, and microorganisms from various wound types, including Stage I-IV pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, first- and second-degree burns, and post-surgical wounds. It is formulated to be isotonic, non-irritating, and effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria like MRSA, as well as planktonic and mature biofilms.
