Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**biapenem + vaborbactam** is a combination drug consisting of **biapenem**, a carbapenem-class beta-lactam antibiotic, and **vaborbactam**, a cyclic boronic acid beta-lactamase inhibitor. The carbapenem provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis via binding to penicillin-binding proteins, while vaborbactam protects the carbapenem from degradation by serine beta-lactamases, specifically targeting carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales that produce Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC). This combination is designed to treat serious Gram-negative infections where resistance to carbapenems is mediated by beta-lactamase production. The main mechanism is restoring carbapenem activity against resistant pathogens by inhibition of beta-lactamase enzymes.
