Bicarbonated Ringer's solution (BRS) is a balanced, buffered isotonic crystalloid intravenous fluid used primarily for perioperative fluid therapy and volume replacement. Unlike lactated Ringer's solution, which relies on hepatic metabolism of lactate to generate bicarbonate, BRS contains sodium bicarbonate as a direct alkalizing agent. This direct buffering mechanism makes it particularly advantageous for patients with hepatic dysfunction or those undergoing liver surgery, such as laparoscopic partial hepatectomy, as it helps prevent or correct metabolic acidosis and lactic acid accumulation more effectively. The solution typically contains a balanced profile of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride, to maintain physiological homeostasis and support acid-base balance during surgical procedures.
