Overview

Biktarvy is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It consists of three active components: bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide. Bictegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that prevents the HIV-1 integrase enzyme from incorporating viral DNA into the host cell genome. Emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide are nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), respectively; they function as chain terminators that inhibit the reverse transcription of viral RNA into DNA. This combination is designed as a complete, once-daily oral regimen for both treatment-naive patients and those who are virologically suppressed on a stable antiretroviral regimen. Smits Healthcare distributes this combination, often marketed under the brand name Taffic, which is a generic version of the original Gilead Sciences product.
