Overview

Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis 420 + polydextrose is a synbiotic combination consisting of the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis 420 (B420) and the prebiotic fiber Litesse Ultra polydextrose (LU). Developed by IFF (formerly DuPont Nutrition & Health and Danisco), this combination is primarily investigated for weight management and the reduction of body fat mass in overweight and obese adults. The mechanism of action involves modulating the gut microbial community composition (e.g., increasing Akkermansia muciniphila), increasing the production of beneficial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (propionate, butyrate), and improving gut barrier integrity, as evidenced by reduced levels of the permeability marker zonulin. Clinical data from a six-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT01978691) demonstrated that the synbiotic significantly reduces total body fat mass, trunk fat, and waist circumference while also decreasing daily energy intake.
