Overview

**Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12** is a defined, orally administered probiotic bacterial strain commercialized as **BB-12**. Originally developed by Chr. Hansen and now supplied within Novonesis, it is used in dietary supplements, infant formula, and fermented dairy products. BB-12 survives gastrointestinal transit and is thought to act through strain-dependent interactions with the intestinal ecosystem, including epithelial adherence, support of intestinal barrier function, modulation of gut microbial communities, pathogen exclusion, and immune modulation rather than through a single druggable molecular target. Clinical studies have evaluated it for low defecation frequency, infant colic, and prevention of illness-related daycare absences associated with diarrhea and upper respiratory tract infections.
