Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bifidobacterium bifidum + 2'-fucosyllactose is a synbiotic combination product consisting of the probiotic bacterium *Bifidobacterium bifidum* and the prebiotic 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL). [1, 2] *B. bifidum* is a beneficial microbe naturally found in the human gastrointestinal tract, particularly in healthy, breastfed infants. [15, 18] 2'-FL is the most abundant human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), a complex sugar that is indigestible by humans but serves as a selective nutrient for specific gut bacteria. [2, 5, 18] The synergistic mechanism involves 2'-FL promoting the growth, gut adhesion, and proliferation of *B. bifidum*. [1, 3, 6] This modulation of the gut microbiome enhances intestinal barrier function, helps competitively exclude pathogens, and produces beneficial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). [1, 13, 15] This combination is primarily used in infant formulas to mimic the bifidogenic effect of breast milk and as a dietary supplement to support digestive health. [12, 21] Studies have investigated its potential benefits for conditions such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and immune system modulation. [1, 11]
