Overview
Infloran is a probiotic combination consisting of live *Bifidobacterium bifidum* (strain NCTC 11060) and *Lactobacillus acidophilus* (strain NCTC 11047). It is primarily indicated for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm, low-birth-weight infants. The mechanism of action involves the colonization of the neonatal gastrointestinal tract, which promotes a healthy microbiome, enhances the intestinal mucosal barrier, and provides competitive exclusion against pathogenic bacteria that contribute to the pathogenesis of NEC. Originally developed by the Swiss Serum and Vaccine Institute, it is currently manufactured by SIT Laboratorio Farmaceutico and is used in neonatal intensive care units globally. It is registered as a medicinal product in several jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom and Italy.
