bifidobacterium lactis + bifidobacterium longum is a probiotic combination therapy consisting of two species of Gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria. This combination is primarily utilized in neonatal care to support the development of a healthy gut microbiome in preterm infants, who are at high risk for dysbiosis due to premature birth and hospital environments. Clinical research, such as the NCT01379417 trial, evaluates its efficacy in improving postnatal growth parameters and reducing the incidence of severe complications like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and late-onset sepsis. The mechanism involves competitive exclusion of pathogens, enhancement of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and production of short-chain fatty acids that support gut health and immune system maturation.
