Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bifidobacterium longum + Lactobacillus acidophilus + Enterococcus faecalis is an orally administered live biotherapeutic product, available as a capsule under the brand name BIFICO. It is being investigated in clinical trials by the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University for the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in patients on hemodialysis. The therapeutic rationale is based on addressing the gut dysbiosis commonly observed in CKD patients. This imbalance leads to an overproduction of uremic toxins, such as indoxyl-sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate, and contributes to systemic inflammation. By introducing these three beneficial bacterial strains, the probiotic aims to restore a healthier gut microbiota, which in turn is expected to reduce the production of these toxins, decrease inflammation, and improve the integrity of the intestinal barrier, potentially slowing the progression of CKD and its complications. The product is manufactured by Sine Pharmaceuticals.
